More Control Over Product URLs for Enhanced Visibility Across the Web

We introduced a new shop setting that empowers you to define the structure of your item page URLs. This update allows you to align your shop's technical setup with your specific SEO goals and the requirements of external marketing channels.

To use this feature, Shop version 2.21.1 or higher is required.

Strategic flexibility for your business

Different business models demand different URL strategies. While some benefit from concentrated SEO authority on a single page, others require distinct landing pages for every item variation to ensure data consistency across the web. You can now select the pattern that best suits your needs.

Maximise variation visibility with distinct URLs

The "Modern URL Scheme" (/item-name_itemID_variantID) assigns a unique URL to every variation. This is the recommended choice if you use platforms like Google Shopping. Because each variant links directly to its specific price, you avoid price mismatches and potential item disapprovals. This scheme also enables direct linking to specific variants and strengthens your variant-level SEO potential.

Consolidate signals with Legacy URLs

The "Legacy URL Scheme" (/item-name/a-itemID) maintains a single, shared URL for all variants of an item. This approach prevents duplicate content and consolidates all SEO signals onto one main item page, simplifying your analytics and maintenance. This pattern is ideal if your variants are primarily cosmetic or share identical prices.

Configure your preferences

To select your preferred URL pattern, navigate to [SEO > Item URL Handling] in your shops editor. If you are migrating from plentyShop LTS, verify which URL scheme you currently use and apply the same pattern to the new shop to maintain SEO consistency. Please note that changing your URL structure may impact existing search engine rankings; we recommend reviewing your SEO strategy before switching.
